Planted publishes first sustainability report

3 min reading time

Kemptthal, April 12, 2022 - Just three years after it was founded, the Swiss foodtech start-up Planted, known for its meat alternatives, today published its first sustainability report. The report contains detailed information about the company's sustainability achievements, progress and plans for 2021. Planted is the fastest growing European alternative protein start-up.

‍

In 2019, Planted realized that its chicken alternative would upend the way meat is perceived. Starting out as a start-up that initially sold its products from a laboratory at ETH Zurich, the founders quickly understood that many people love the taste of meat, but no longer at any price. Consumers are increasingly paying attention to taste, naturalness, environmental compatibility and health when eating. Thanks to the development of products with a perfect bite and high protein content that contain only natural ingredients, it has never been easier to swap meat for a plant-based alternative. Planted's mission is to provide products that are better than animal meat and produced without the negative environmental impact associated with animal agriculture.

Planted's 2021 Sustainability Report is the company's first attempt to document and communicate its sustainable path - from the beginning to what has been achieved so far to where the founders' vision should lead. Planted is an innovation-driven company that leverages scientific advances to rapidly develop biostructured products because the company believes they will beat animal meat in the future in terms of taste, sustainability, health, efficiency and price. For this reason, Planted sees all of these aspects as guiding principles on the path to greater sustainability - because no sustainable change in the food system can take place without taking them into account.

The 2021 Sustainability Report highlights Planted's activities in the following areas, among others: packaging solutions, circular economy of resources and operational measures to reduce the overall ecological footprint. Planted focuses on improving resource efficiency and better understanding the footprint of its products. With the in-depth analysis of four different products, the company has already taken a decisive step towards measuring and monitoring the impact. Planted's product portfolio has enormous savings potential compared to animal products: 74 to 85 percent fewer CO2 equivalents are produced and up to 63 percent water is saved.

Planted wants to do even better and has established measures to measure and manage its impact on the environment. This includes reducing plastic consumption, investing in the circular economy, switching to 100 percent renewable energy sources, improving responsible sourcing management and reaching more people with Planted products.

Politics also plays an important role in creating the right framework conditions to make the transition to a sustainable food system a reality. Planted works with industry partners to advance the issue of sustainable alternative protein sources on the political agenda and is a founding partner of the SPA | Swiss Protein Association
